Why did AKB48’s Atsuko Maeda not attend the election?
AKB48’s Atsuko Maeda announced in March 2013 that she will not attend the 5th Senbatsu Election. The Senbatsu Election is another name for the yearly General Election held for AKB48 and all of its other groups. In spite of the rules were changed to allow former AKB48 members to take part in these elections, Maeda decided not to become a candidate. It was during a press conference at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards Japan that AKB48 beauty Atsuko Maeda was asked by reporters whether she would attend the election or not. Maeda declined to comment on the issue during that time.
She revealed through Twitter that she would be filming overseas and she chose to not attend the election.
As part of the new rules, the girls are required to formally enter themselves as candidates. A current or former AKB48 member that has been with the group for four years or longer is eligible to take part in this election. These Senbatsu Elections are held to determine the members that will sing in the group’s singles. Maeda was voted AKB48’s most popular member in 2009 and 2011. She finished runner-up to AKB48 idol Yuko Oshima in 2010 however.
Those girls that qualified were eligible to enter their names as candidates in the 5th General Election on March 31, 2013. This is old news but it is still significant because along with the handshake events, these general elections are really important to the group. Members Erena Ono, Yuka Masuda, Rumi Yonezawa, and Sayaka Nakaya also would not end up coming to the election that year. Kayo Noro and Kazumi Urano of idol group SDN48 announced that they would attend the election. Atsuko Maeda is a real beauty because she has been seen in various magazines, most notably Weekly Playboy Magazine in Japan. Those of you that read Japan’s Weekly Playboy will love to see her in photos! In 2010, Maeda posed as a sexy bikini model for Weekly Playboy Magazine. She was seen relaxing poolside with Oshima, Minami Takahashi, Tomomi Itano, and Mayu Watanabe. But AKB48’s Atsuko Maeda is important also because she opened the door for other girls to become a part of AKB48 and become successful. As of 2016, she has a solo album called Selfish.
