In what I would say was big news in Japan’s entertainment industry, AKB48 sub-unit Diva disbanded in 2014. This announcement was made by current SNH48 member Sae Miyazawa and NMB48 member Ayaka Umeda on the late night radio show AKB48 no All Night Nippon on August 13, 2014. The announcement came just two weeks before the scheduled release of AKB48’s 37th single called Kokoro no Placard. The formation of Diva goes back to February 2011 when four members of AKB48’s second generation which includes the mentioned Umeda and Miyazawa, Sayaka Akimoto, and Yuka Masuda. They made their major label debut in May 2011 under the label avex. Then in December 2011, they became a ten member group when they recruited six dancers from the public or to put it another way, six back dancers. Good luck girls with whatever you choose to do.
It was in January 2013 that Masuda resigned from the group after she left AKB48 in December 2012 following a highly publicized scandal. There was a report that came out that Yuka Masuda spent the night over at DA PUMP member ISSA’s place of residence which was in clear violation of AKB48’s no dating rule. And then Akimoto graduated from AKB48 in August 2013 but said that she would continue to be a part of Diva. However, since Miyazawa and Umeda changed groups, it was harder for the members to continue working in this sub-unit. Note: Yuka Masuda posed as a lingerie and bikini model for the magazines Young Champion and Weekly Playboy with her Diva band mates.
What did AKB48 sub-unit Diva do before they disbanded?
Before the group disbanded they changed their name to DIVA and released their 4th single on October 8, 2014. This was their first single released in 2.5 years. The single was composed, written, and arranged by Tetsuya Komuro. Diva also released their first two albums and held a live concert before they disbanded. On the show, Miyazawa called up Yuko Oshima and offered her the chance for her to write the lyrics for the group’s last album. Although Oshima hesitated about accepting the offer at first, she eventually agreed to write the lyrics. In another big announcement, Yuka Masuda made her return to the group for their last single. This is a good comeback for Masuda given the embarrassing way in which she had to withdraw from AKB48. In an act of bravery, confidence or whatever you would like to call it Miyazawa clearly said that the group will give the fans the last album, single, and concert and that these would be the band’s best works before they disband. While one sub-unit stopped working, there are two other sub-units that are still active. They are French Kiss and Not Yet. Not Yet features current HKT48 singer Rino Sashihara, AKB48 members Rie Kitahara, Yuko Oshima (former because she graduated on June 8, 2014), and Yui Yokoyama who is now the captain of Team K and the most beautiful member in the group now. However, after 2015 French Kiss will also no longer be active because they will end their activities as well. The last single that DIVA released as a group is called Discovery. And that ends the career of AKB48 sub-unit Diva but even so, Japan’s idol industry is still a major success.
