Popular idol group AKB48 reaches the top of Billboard Japan Year End Charts for 2016. You read this correctly, it is not a misprint. Japan’s top girl group has reached its peak of greatness once again!
The rankings on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 are based on a number of factors. These are physical as well as digital sales, amount of radio airplay, mentions on social networking site Twitter, the amount of view counts on YouTube and GYAO! The two other factors that determine the rankings on the Billboard Japan Top 100 are something called Gracenote Lookups and streaming counts which are based on lyrics that are displayed on PetitLyrics.
On the top of the list is AKB48’s single called Tsubasa wa Iranai which has sold 2.5 million copies as of this writing!
This is the fourth time that AKB48 has reached the year-end Japan Top 100 chart since the chart was started back in 2008. Four AKB48 singles released in 2016 reached the top 10 of the Billboard Japan Hot 100 of the Year. The other three singles to be ranked in the Top 10 are Kimi wa Melody (#4), LOVE TRIP (#7), and High Tension (#8). Each of these 4 singles sold over 1.4 million copies. AKB48 took the time to comment on reaching the Top of the Billboard Japan Year End Charts. In addition to the success AKB48 has achieved by getting to the top of the Billboard Japan Year End Charts, a young AKB48 member is having a huge milestone moment of her own!
Member Mion Mukaichi mentioned that Tsubasa wa Iranai is the first time that she has a solo center spot and she is also happy that the song has grown to be loved by so many people. Yui Yokoyama also took the time to comment on the group’s success saying: “It gives us great confidence to know that a song which featured one of our younger members Mion at the center spot, was loved by so many people. It’s a huge honor and we feel super motivated for next year.” Source: http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/7624388/billboard-japan-year-end-lists-akb48-justin-bieber. Back in 2014, I mentioned that you could make the case that Yokoyama Yui may be the prettiest AKB48 member. And I also said that in January 2014, Yui Yokoyama opened up an account on Twitter.
Yuki Kashiwagi (ex-French Kiss) said that Tsubasa wa Iranai had a folk song type of melody and it was different from anything that the group had put out before. It was a huge challenge for the group but Kashiwagi says she is glad that the song was heard by so many people. For AKB48, Kashiwagi says that this #1 ranking will boost the group’s confidence. And Mayu Watanabe (not related to NMB48’s Miyuki Watanabe) shared her thoughts on the group’s success saying that reaching the top of the year-end charts is not easy to do. Watanabe is filled with much gratitude for the people that listened to the song and she wants to keep working even harder having this feeling in mind.
And as for Yuki Kashiwagi, I have already written a tribute post about her. She spent time with AKB48 sub-unit French Kiss with Asuka Kuramochi and Aki Takajo. She has released two singles Short Cake and Birthday Wedding. And she even met her childhood idol Rika Ishikawa early in 2013. Kashiwagi like many of these Japanese idols has also had a modeling career. She appeared as a cover model for the beauty and fashion magazine called Anan in 2013. Kashiwagi also appeared as a bikini model on Young Magazine dressed in a beautiful red bikini. Kashiwagi celebrated her 25th birthday in 2016 just like other famous AKB48 idols such as Minami Takahashi, Tomomi Itano, Aki Takajo, and Atsuko Maeda.
AKB48 reaches the top of the Billboard Japan Year-End Charts having much to feel great about. I mentioned before how the group has had record-breaking singles such as Sayonara Crawl and Green Flash. By March 2013, the group had sold over 20 million singles. They always push all the right buttons and it works out very well for them! Congratulations to AKB48 on reaching the top of the Billboard Japan Year End Charts for 2016! With this milestone reached, AKB48 will top that off with the release of their 8th studio album on January 25, 2017.
